Hakuto-R Mission 1

47.500° 44.000° · Atlas crater (crashed)

First ispace landing attempt. Altimetry error: lander ran out of fuel believing it was already on the surface.

Trajectory

Falcon 9 rideshare launch on a low-energy ballistic lunar transfer (~5 months cruise). The lander entered lunar orbit successfully and began powered descent on 25 April 2023. As it crossed Atlas crater's rim, a software filter rejected the laser-rangefinder readings as outliers; the spacecraft believed it had landed at 0 m altitude when it was still ~5 km above the surface, ran out of propellant, and impacted at terminal velocity.
